Presentationen baseras på Ellen Desmet och Ruth Brittles artikel “Thirty Years of Research on Children’s Rights in the Context of Migration” (2020) publicerad i International Journal of Children’s Rights.

Thirty years of research on children in the context of migration: where do we go from here?

This article, co-authored with Ruth Brittle, analyses how research has approached the issue of children’s human rights in migration processes from 1989 to 2019, during which this topic has been receiving increasing attention. This analysis identifies the main focuses of research during this period, in the form of studies into unaccompanied, refugee and asylum-seeking children in European and Anglophone contexts, and how their migration influences the dynamics between international refugee law and children’s rights. In the process, this analysis also identifies gaps in research, such as certain groups of children receiving less attention than others, as well as other reasons for migration apart from refugee and asylum claims. Moreover, some categories of rights have been insufficiently discussed. Consequently, this analysis suggests that research in this area should move beyond its Euro-centric focus, strengthen methodological interdisciplinarity and enhance its conceptualisation of children’s rights, as well as including children in the research process.
